The calculators are simplifications
Every calculator on this site models something more complicated than it can fully represent. Each page has a section headed "What this doesn't cover", and that section is the honest part. Read it. It is usually where the assumption that matters to you is hiding.
Common examples:
- Tax is generally not included, because it depends on where you live and changes every year.
- Fees, charges and insurance are usually excluded unless a page says otherwise.
- Investment returns are modelled as steady annual rates. Real markets are not steady, and past returns do not predict future ones.
- Inflation is applied only where a page says it is.
Accuracy
The formulas are checked against known results and the working is shown on every page, but no guarantee is given that any result is accurate, complete, or suitable for your purpose. Rounding, day-count conventions and compounding assumptions mean that a bank, lender or tax authority may legitimately produce a slightly different figure. Their figure is the one that counts.
